US 52 at Illinois

The road forms a diagonal east-west route through the north of the state, from the Iowa border at Savanna through Joliet at the edge of the Chicago metropolitan area to the Indiana border at Sheldon. US 52 has little through importance because there are plenty of freeway alternatives in the area. The route is 347 kilometers long.

At the village of Savanna, US 52 in Iowa crosses the Mississippi River from Dubuque, then climbs about 60 meters to exit the river valley. The road then continues through a quiet section of northwestern Illinois to Dixon, 75 miles to the southeast. This area mainly consists of plains with meadows and farms. In Dixon the road crosses the Rock River and after Dixon it joins Interstate 88. A little past Dixon you cross the US 30, the road from Clinton to Aurora. US 52 continues to head southeast, intersecting US 34 at Mendota, 50 kilometers after Dixon . Just south of Mendota, US 52 turns east and joins Interstate 39follows. US 52 then heads due east, through a rural area to Joliet, 80 kilometers to the east.
Joliet is the southwestern subcenter of the Chicago metropolitan area . Here is a connection with Interstate 55 on the west side of Joliet. In Joliet you cross the US 6 near the center and shortly afterwards the connection with the Interstate 80 follows. US 52 then runs south, to have a short double numbering with US 45 to Kankakee, after which it connects with Interstate 57. US 52 then heads south, jumps east several times, and merges with US 24 at Sheldon. Together, both roads cross the Indiana border, after which US 52 enters Indianacontinues to Lafayette and Indianapolis.
US 52 was created in 1926, but was not yet passing through Illinois at the time. That happened from 1934 when the route was extended from Fowler, Indiana, just over the border with Illinois, to Moorhead, Minnesota. US 52 follows a somewhat man-made route and attempts to run diagonally through the north of the state, requiring frequent turning to follow the route. Through traffic will rarely travel on US 52 for long distances, but there is no direct alternative, although US 52 crosses several Interstate Highways.
About 2,150 vehicles cross the Mississippi River every day, making US 52 one of the quietest river bridges in Illinois. Between Savanna and Dixon is a valley with only 700 vehicles per day. After Dixon this is a bit higher with 3,000 vehicles to Mendota. The route from Mendota to Joliet is also very quiet with 1,500 vehicles. The double-numbered section with US 45 is a bit busier with 6,700 vehicles, and 1,500 vehicles for Sheldon. 4,600 vehicles cross the Indiana border every day .
US 54 at Illinois
US 54 is a US Highway in the US state of Illinois. The road forms an east-west route through the west of the state, from the Missouri border at Pike to Interstate 72 at Griggsville. The route is 39 kilometers long.

At the hamlet of Pike, US 54 in Missouri crosses the Mississippi River from Bowling Green into the state of Illinois. After a few miles, the road climbs out of the Mississippi Valley and enters a flat area of meadows and farms. The road continues through Pittsfield and ends a few miles further at the junction with Interstate 72.
US 54 was created in 1926 and then terminated at Pittsfield at US 36. Before I-72 was built, US 54 continued as far as downtown Chicago. In the 1970s, the Illinois number was drastically shortened in favor of US 36, SR-54, and US 45.
Some 3,400 vehicles cross the Mississippi River daily, making US 54 one of the quieter Mississippi River crossings. Towards Pittsfield, this drops to 2,100 vehicles and 4,900 vehicles drive at the junction with I-72.
US 6 at Illinois

The road forms an east-west route through the northern half of the state, from the Iowa border at Moline to the Indiana border at Lansing. US 6 runs a short distance parallel to Interstate 80 for most of its route. The road is 289 kilometers long.
In the conurbation of Quad Cities, near the town of Moline, US 6 in Iowa enters the state of Illinois from Bettendorf and Davenport by crossing the Mississippi River with Interstate 74. US 6 is then double-numbered with I-74 through Moline to Quad City International Airport. Crossing the Rock River here, I-74 turns east, while US 6 continues to the end of the cloverleaf, then turns east. US 150 also begins here. US 6 then leaves the urban area of the Quad Cities and crosses Interstate 80, then US 6 runs a short distance north of I-80. The road network in this area is built in a grid, although not as tight as in Iowa. US 6 does have some curves, though it’s mostly a straight road, crossing I-80 at Atkinson and continuing south of it. This area consists of barren agricultural areas without too many differences in height. At the village of Sheffield a double numbering starts with the US 34 from Galesburg. This double numbering is about 25 kilometers long and lasts until the small town of Princeton. In Princeton, US 34 exits, while US 6 continues east, connecting with Interstate 180follows. One then enters the valley of the Illinois River, which for the time being flows parallel to US 6. Then a few larger villages follow, such as Spring Valley, Peru and La Salle. This last place connects with Interstate 39. Then US 6 continues east and passes through the town of Ottawa. US 6 then follows the course of the Illinois River to Morris and on to Channahon.

From Channahon you pass through the first suburbs of Chicago. There will be a connection with Interstate 55. One then enters the fast-growing city of Joliet, which is a major sub-center in the southwest of the Chicago metropolitan area. Interstate 80 crosses here and US 6 continues through downtown Joliet, crossing the Des Plaines River. In Joliet one crosses a number of US Highways such as US 30 and US 52. After Joliet the road is called the Southwest Highway, but is relatively unimportant and has one lane in each direction. Interstate 355. is crossed in the suburb of New Lenox. One comes here through an intermediate area with quite a few meadows between Joliet and the southern suburbs. However, this only takes a few kilometers, and you then arrive in the suburb Orland Park. One then crosses the US 45. After this, US 6 is a 2×2 divided highway and runs through the suburbs of Tinley Park and Oak Forest. One now crosses more larger north-south roads as the road network from here on is in a large grid pattern. In the suburb of Markham, two highways are crossed in quick succession, first Interstate 57 and then Interstate 294. Then you pass through the suburbs of Harvey and South Holland, after which you join Interstate 94in Calumet City. Shortly thereafter, US 6 turns south and merges into Interstate 80 and Interstate 94 via a SPUI, taking US 6 over the border into Indiana. US 6 in Indiana then continues toward Gary.

That US 6 was an important road was later reflected in the construction of Interstate 80 in Illinois directly parallel to it. This happened between 1950 and 1968. I-80 runs no more than a few miles from US 6 in most places.
