History of Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland

Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, began its history in the early 1940s when President Franklin Roosevelt authorized the construction of an airfield near Washington, D.C., to serve as a hub for military aircraft. The base was named Camp Springs Army Air Field and was dedicated to Lt. Gen. Frank Maxwell Andrews, who had died earlier that year while serving as commander of U.S. forces in Europe during World War II.

Camp Springs Army Air Field became operational in 1943 and served as a training facility for bomber crews and fighter pilots during World War II. After the war ended, the base was renamed Andrews Air Force Base (AFB) on August 13th 1945 – two days after Japan’s surrender.

In 1948, Andrews AFB became home to the newly formed Military Air Transport Service (MATS), which provided worldwide transportation of personnel and equipment for all branches of the U.S. military until 1966 when it was replaced by the Military Airlift Command (MAC).

Today Andrews AFB is home to both Air Force One and Marine One – serving as the primary airport for presidential travel since 1953 – as well as other high-ranking government officials and foreign dignitaries who require secure transportation services around the world. Additionally, Andrews is home to various major commands including US Air Forces Central Command’s 11th Wing; Headquarters Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling; 844th Communications Group; 459th Aerospace Medicine Squadron; and many other key organizations that support national security objectives worldwide.
